3 Places Where a Child Gets LOST (and How We Can Help Them Find Their Way)

“Children are not things to be molded, but people to be unfolded.” – Jess Lair

Every child spends most of their life moving between three spaces – Home, Playground, and School. Ironically, these are also the very places where children often get lost – not physically, but emotionally, socially, or mentally. Let’s decode this with some wit, wisdom, and practical parenting insights.

1. HOME: The First School

Parents are their children’s first teachers. The habits, values, and love of learning a child develops at home set the foundation for school and life.

📊 Did you know?

  • Before kindergarten, your child spends about 17,500 waking hours at home.
  • In comparison, during a typical school day, a child gets just 11 minutes of individual attention in class.

That means home is not just a place to eat and sleep – it’s a classroom of values, imagination, and emotions.

💡 Parenting Tip 1
👉 Instead of overloading kids with logic and lectures, give them their wish in fantasy.
If a child wants a tree that grows chocolates – draw it with them. They’ll learn more from imagination than from explanation.

❤️ Spouse Note
Don’t forget your partner in this journey. A father once wrote a heartfelt letter to his wife after their first child was born, thanking her. Such small gestures can mean the world. While children bring joy, let’s not forget the one who made motherhood possible.

2. PLAYGROUND: Where Character is Revealed

Once upon a time, parents had to scream to get kids back from the playground. Today, they scream to get kids out of their gadgets and into the playground. Strange are the times!

“Sports don’t develop character; they reveal it.”

🏃 Trivia & Stories

  • Winning an Olympic gold in 100m takes less than 10 seconds… but 20 years of effort.
  • Usain Bolt did all his ad shoots in Jamaica – bringing revenue home while inspiring the world.
  • When one boy fell during a school race, his classmates stopped and helped him. The crowd cheered louder than for the winners. Lesson? Humanity > medals.

👉 To increase our medal tally, we first need to increase our kids’ mental rally. Get them on the ground, let them lose, fall, and rise again.

💧 Like Yusra Mardini, the Syrian refugee who swam for survival before competing at the Olympics – real learning often happens outside classrooms, in the unpredictability of life.

3. SCHOOL: Asking the Right Questions

Schools shape curiosity – but only when they listen. Too often, education becomes about telling, not listening. Children don’t always need our advice – they need acknowledgment.

💡 Parenting Tip 3
👉 Instead of constant questioning, respond with simple acknowledgment:
“Oh…” | “Mmm…” | “I see.”
Sometimes a nod is louder than a lecture.
