I Can’t Do It” – Or Can You? A Blog About Mindsets (with OTPs and Milk)

I Can’t Do It

Ever heard someone say, “I’m just not a math person”? Or maybe you’ve said it yourself?
Well, sit tight. This blog may just mess with your mindset — in a good way.

🎓 Enter: Carol Dweck — The Mindset Maven

Carol Dweck book

Carol Dweck, a psychologist with a mission, gave us one of the simplest yet most powerful tools in human development: Mindset Theory.

She said, we’ve got two kinds:

  • Fixed mindset: “I was born this way.”
  • Growth mindset: “I can learn this, even if I suck at it now.”

Sounds obvious? Maybe. But hold on.

“I’m Not Good at Math” — The Most Popular Lie Ever Told

Recently, I was chatting with a young girl who said something I’ve heard a thousand times:
👉 “Math isn’t my thing.”

I asked her, “Do you use a calendar?”
She nodded.
“Do you check the time? Use OTPs? Order milk? Bake a cake with ingredients?”
Suddenly, she looked confused. “Of course…”

“Then math IS your thing,” I smiled. “You’ve just been tricked into believing it’s not.”

Numbers are everywhere. From your shoe size to your birthdate. Even your Instagram stats? Yup — math.

The real problem isn’t numbers. It’s narratives.

We’ve been sold a story that says we’re either “math people” or “not math people.” And we bought it.

I’m Not Good at Math

A Little About Me: HR? Nope. Finance? Double Nope.

For years, I believed I wasn’t good at HR or finance. Why?
Because someone said it. And I believed them. I wore that label like a badge.

But life (and a little bit of Excel panic) had other plans.
Today? I manage people and money better than most around me. Budgeting? Team-building? Conflict resolution?

Not because I magically became smarter. But because I stopped believing the lie.

The truth? I wasn’t bad at it — I was just new at it.

Quick Detour: The Funny Thing About Fixed Mindset

Ever seen someone say, “I’m terrible with names!”
And then proceed to forget your name after 4 seconds?

What if instead of laughing it off, they said,
👉 “I struggle with remembering names. But I’m working on it.”

Boom. Growth mindset in action.

Or the classic:
🧍‍♂️ “I don’t dance. I have two left feet.”
Really? Even when you’re alone at home with headphones on and BTS starts playing? (Arijit for me! Please!)

We can learn. If we’re willing to unlearn the labels first.

🛠️ The Toolkit to Unbox Your Brain

The Toolkit to Unbox Your Brain

So how do you shift from fixed to growth? Start here:

1.Watch Your Words:
Every time you say “I can’t”, add a “yet.”
“I can’t speak in public… yet.”
“I don’t understand taxes… yet.”

2.Look for Progress, Not Perfection:
You don’t need to be the next Elon Musk. Just get better than you from last week.

3.Celebrate Micro-Wins:
Read one page? Win.
Cooked your own meal? Win.
Didn’t panic when Excel opened with a blank screen? Win!

4.Surround Yourself with Growers:
Hang out with people who ask “How can I learn this?” instead of “Why am I like this?”

🧩 Final Thought: You’re Not a Puzzle Piece, You’re Play-Doh

You’re not stuck. You’re shapeable. And if Play-Doh can be molded into everything from a dinosaur to a donut — you, my friend, can grow into anything you choose.

Mindset isn’t just a TED talk topic. It’s a life hack.
It’s the difference between “This is who I am” and “This is who I’m becoming.”

So next time your brain tries to sell you the “I can’t” narrative —
remember to ask it, “Says who?”

🧠 Quote to Chew On:

“Whether you think you can or you can’t – you’re right.” – Henry Ford

Let’s not stay stuck in the stories someone else wrote for us.
Instead, let’s grab the pen — and rewrite our own.
